PURA VIDA ~ COSTA RICA: MY ONE MONTH ADVENTURE

Welcome to paradise! Over 28 days, I embarked on an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of Costa Rica with my husband. This came on the heels of my 10 day visit to Pacuare and the Caribbean Coast 8 months ago and there’s still plenty more on my list for next time.

By the numbers, my Costa Rican Adventure was 4 weeks, 8 stays, 12 hotel site visits, and 1 island glamping experience. Breaking down this extraordinarily biodiverse country by numbers doesn’t do it justice, but it’s a start. You can expect genuine Costa Rican Hospitality, incredible biodiversity, a culinary scene reflective of the country’s fresh ingredients, adventure of every
kind and a serious coffee game.

From the pristine beaches of the Pacific Ocean to the lush cloud forests of Monteverde, and the majestic volcanoes of Arenal, we immersed in the essence of Pura Vida – the pure life.

Santa Teresa - surf and beach vibes

We began along the sun-drenched shores of Santa Teresa, a laid-back surf town nestled along the Nicoya Peninsula (home of the famed Blue Zone). The heart of Santa Teresa revolves around the Pacific Ocean and the beach scene that attracts a diverse crowd of surf enthusiasts, artists, yogis, and free spirits. Beyond the beaches, Santa Teresa is surrounded by lush tropical rainforests, teeming with biodiversity.

Sunsets on this expanse are stunning and rank a 10/10. Locals and tourists converge nightly on the beach and we witnessed the “green flash” multiple times.

Isla Chiquita Glamping - be still my glamping heart!

Climb aboard a boat for your transfer to adorable Isla Chiquita and be prepared to decompress in nature. I am a sucker for a safari style tent and all the more so when it is elevated with plush bedding, a private plunge pool, tropical views and an en-suite bathroom.

Among the many excursions available is night kayaking - an unmissable adventure exploring skipping needle fish and bioluminescent algae as it lights up the sea underneath the enveloping canopy of a shimmering night sky. Cue the puffer fish as well!

Manuel Antonio - cue the monkeys

Next stop, Manuel Antonio National Park, where lush rainforests meet pristine beaches teeming with wildlife.

Exploring Manuel Antonio National Park with a private guide allowed us to discover the park's incredible biodiversity up close. Geraldo, our guide, brought the hidden habitat to us as we spotted iguanas, monkeys, colorful birds, and elusive sloths. End your visit to the park by
cooling off in the turquoise waters of pristine Manuel Antonio Beach.Trekking through lush rainforests, we spent a day exploring hidden waterfalls tucked away in the heart of nature. Cooking class on a farm offered up a unique opportunity to delve into Costa Rica's culinary traditions and farm-to-table culture.

Monteverde - the cloud forest
Our next destination transported us to the misty cloud forests of Monteverde, a haven for nature lovers and adrenaline junkies alike. Explore the treetops on exhilarating zip line and hanging bridge adventures, marvel at the beauty of hummingbird gardens, and embark on guided hikes through the verdant trails of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Tamarindo - local vibes & restaurants
Back at the coast after a somewhat harrowing ride (the potholes have potholes, and I’m from Chicago), we arrived at the vibrant beach town of Tamarindo, renowned for surf breaks for all ability levels and a lively atmosphere.

Spend your days riding the waves, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and indulging in fresh ceviche and tropical cocktails at beachside bars. You’ll be back on the Pacific Ocean and the sunset views again rated 10/10. For a closer look, book a sunset catamaran cruise and witness the fiery hues of the Costa Rican sky bedding down for the night.

Bikes & Beer - what could be better? We rented bikes from Handle Bar Tamarindo for a day of adventure and recommend throwing the bikes on a water taxi to explore the wide open beaches of Playa Grande. Upon returning the bikes, stay for the camaraderie, bites and brew at this local, friendly hangout.

Papagayo Peninsula - end on a high note!

Our final leg of the journey took us to the exclusive Papagayo Peninsula, a pristine paradise boasting secluded beaches and luxury resorts and a short 30 minute ride back to the Liberia airport.

Upon arrival at the Andaz Costa Rica Resort, we were greeted with cool cucumber towels and fresh, icy cold coconut water. The resort's stunning open-air lobby, designed with indigenous materials and contemporary flair, sets the tone for a superb stay. One of the resident white faced monkeys might be on hand to welcome you.

The property boasts activities for everyone: yoga, wellness, water sports, and adventures. Be sure to take the boat to the beach club for jet skis (so fun!), paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkeling.

After 4 weeks of spectacular meals, we were surprised to once again be amazed by more creative and delicious dishes. A special shout out to Alexis from breakfast, who remembered me daily by name and made every effort to brighten my morning.
