Travel Blog: Exploring the Essence of Pura Vida: A Month-Long Journey through Costa Rica

“This is not a one time country” 

Welcome to paradise! Over 28 days, I embarked on an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of Costa Rica with my husband. This came on the heels of my 10 day visit to Pacuare and the Caribbean Coast 8 months ago and there’s still plenty more on my list for next time.  

By the numbers, my Costa Rican Adventure was 4 weeks, 8 stays, 12 hotel site visits, and 1 island glamping experience.  Breaking down this extraordinarily biodiverse country by numbers doesn’t do it justice, but it’s a start.  You can expect genuine Costa Rican Hospitality, incredible biodiversity, a culinary scene reflective of the country’s fresh ingredients, adventure of every kind and a serious coffee game.  

From the pristine beaches of the Pacific Ocean to the lush cloud forests of Monteverde, and the majestic volcanoes of Arenal, we immersed in the essence of Pura Vida – the pure life.

Santa Teresa - surf and beach vibes

We began along the sun-drenched shores of Santa Teresa, a laid-back surf town nestled along the Nicoya Peninsula (home of the famed Blue Zone). The heart of Santa Teresa revolves around the Pacific Ocean and the beach scene that attracts a diverse crowd of surf enthusiasts, artists, yogis, and free spirits.  Beyond the beaches, Santa Teresa is surrounded by lush tropical rainforests, teeming with biodiversity. 

Sunsets on this expanse are stunning and rank a 10/10.  Locals and tourists converge nightly on the beach and we witnessed the “green flash” multiple times.

Isla Jesuita - Isla Chiquita Glamping

Be still my glamping heart!  Climb aboard a boat for your transfer to adorable Isla Chiquita and be prepared to decompress in nature.  I am a sucker for a safari style tent and all the more so when it is elevated with plush bedding, a private plunge pool, tropical views and an en-suite bathroom.  

Among the many excursions available is night kayaking - an unmissable adventure exploring skipping needle fish and bioluminescent algae as it lights up the sea underneath the enveloping canopy of a shimmering night sky. Cue the puffer fish as well!

Manuel Antonio - cue the monkeys

Next stop, Manuel Antonio National Park, where lush rainforests meet pristine beaches teeming with wildlife. 

Exploring Manuel Antonio National Park with a private guide allowed us to discover the park's incredible biodiversity up close.  Geraldo, our guide,  brought the hidden habitat to us as we spotted iguanas, monkeys, colorful birds, and elusive sloths. End your visit to the park by cooling off in the turquoise waters of pristine Manuel Antonio Beach.  

Trekking through lush rainforests, we spent a day exploring hidden waterfalls tucked away in the heart of nature.  Cooking class on a farm offered up a unique opportunity to delve into Costa Rica's culinary traditions and farm-to-table culture.

Arenal - volcano views and thermal hot springs

From the coast, we traveled inland to the dramatic landscapes of Arenal Volcano National Park and a respite from the 95 degree heat. We witnessed the awe-inspiring Arenal Volcano towering over lush rainforests from our beautiful hotel room at Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa. 

Highlights included thrilling adventures such as white-water rafting down the rapids of the Balsa River, hiking through volcanic terrain, and soaking in natural hot springs nestled amidst the jungle.

The local town of La Fortuna offers a delightful culinary scene and vibrant town square.  Our restaurant highlights: Don Rufuino for adults (the steak and wine!) and Travesia for an assortment of mouthwatering surf & turf with local ambiance.

Monteverde - the cloud forest

Our next destination transported us to the misty cloud forests of Monteverde, a haven for nature lovers and adrenaline junkies alike. Explore the treetops on exhilarating zip line and hanging bridge adventures, marvel at the beauty of hummingbird gardens, and embark on guided hikes through the verdant trails of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Tamarindo - local vibes & restaurants

Back at the coast after a somewhat harrowing ride (the potholes have potholes, and I’m from Chicago), we arrived at the vibrant beach town of Tamarindo, renowned for surf breaks for all ability levels and a lively atmosphere. 

Spend your days riding the waves, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and indulging in fresh ceviche and tropical cocktails at beachside bars. You’ll be back on the Pacific Ocean and the sunset views again rated 10/10.  For a closer look, book a sunset catamaran cruise and witness the fiery hues of the Costa Rican sky bedding down for the night.

Bikes & Beer - what could be better?  We rented bikes from https://www.handlebartamarindo.com/ for a day of adventure and recommend throwing the bikes on a water taxi to explore the wide open beaches of Playa Grande.  Upon returning the bikes, stay for the camaraderie, bites and brew at this local, friendly hangout.

Papagayo Peninsula - end on a high note!  

Our final leg of the journey took us to the exclusive Papagayo Peninsula, a pristine paradise boasting secluded beaches and luxury resorts and a short 30 minute ride back to the Liberia airport. 

Upon arrival at the Andaz Costa Rica Resort, we were greeted with cool cucumber towels and fresh, icy cold coconut water. The resort's stunning open-air lobby, designed with indigenous materials and contemporary flair, sets the tone for a superb stay.  One of the resident white faced monkeys might be on hand to welcome you.

The property boasts activities for everyone: yoga, wellness, water sports, and adventures.  Be sure to take the boat to the beach club for jet skis (so fun!), paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkeling. 

After 4 weeks of spectacular meals, we were surprised to once again be amazed by more creative and delicious dishes.  A special shout out to Alexis from breakfast, who remembered me daily by name and made every effort to brighten my morning.

We squeezed in an entire day hiking, boating and viewing the volcanos, and capped the evening off to marvel at the glowing lava of the very active Masaya Volcano.

Travel Blog: Gastronomy + History + Art + Hospitality = Spain

I was honored to participate in the 2023 Spain Tourism Summit hosted by the Spanish Tourism Board held in Mallorca in April. Here are a few highlights from this vibrant experience.

Seville - A Tapestry of Old World Charm and Flamenco

After arriving in Seville, we made our way to the buzzing historic center, brimming with awe-inspiring architectural wonders such as the UNESCO-listed Seville Cathedral and the majestic Alcazar Palace. We were welcomed with traditional Andalusian cuisine at Casa Robles, a must visit restaurant in the heart of Seville. Delish!

While there, be sure to include a visit to the iconic Plaza de España, a magnificent square adorned with colorful tiles, bridges, and a bustling canal. We explored the charming neighborhood of Santa Cruz with its winding streets, hidden squares, and quaint tapas bars.

No visit to Seville is complete without experiencing the passion of flamenco. Tablao Flamenco El Arenal hosted us for a traditional flamenco show, where we witnessed the soul-stirring music and dance performances that have become synonymous with Andalusian culture.

Malaga - A Coastal Haven of Art and Relaxation Traveling south to Malaga (a vibrant port city on the Costa del Sol), we visited the iconic Alcazaba, an ancient Moorish fortress offering panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The Picasso Museum showcases the artistic legacy of Malaga's most famous son, Pablo Picasso and was a lovely stop with a private tour.

Malagueta Beach is a vibrant stretch of golden sand offering crystal-clear waters and a lively promenade filled with beach bars and restaurants. A highlight was lunch at Casa Manuel de La Longa, run by the Manuel Family who has been cooking sardines oven an open fire on the beach since 1944.

Mallorca - A Mediterranean Paradise

On to Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, where we were enchanted by its stunning coastline, charming villages, and picturesque landscapes. Here I met with 75 travel suppliers from throughout Spain, including hoteliers, wineries, tour guides and tourist boards. This allows us to design a trip custom tailored to your individual interests for you and your travel tribe.

This island is home to the rugged beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains to the hidden coves and turquoise waters of Cala Mondrago.

Palma de Mallorca, the island's capital, boasts a fascinating mix of Gothic and Moorish architecture and is adorable! My night in a "monk's cell" at the spectacular boutique Hotel Convent de la Missio capped off the trip in style and is in a perfect location for wandering. I strolled through the winding streets of the Old Town, relishing gelato, visiting the stunning Palma Cathedral, and relaxing in the lively Plaza Mayor.
